Of course I watched Dr. Furhman on The Dr. Oz show and while the show has really started to annoy me, and Dr. Furhman might be more interesting in print than on the big screen, I loved hearing the testimonials of people who saw incredible results following Furhman’s advice. One woman who was over 300 pounds thought all her health problems were related to her weight, but after losing just 30 pounds “eating to live,” she started to feel incredibly healthy and decided to just keep eating the way she now was and ended up losing tons of weight and is now the picture of health inside and out. Another woman was never overweight but was plagued with debilitating migraines that made her miss out on much of life. While she admits that in the beginning eating kale was a challenge for her, she learned to like it and embracing it and the rest of the foods on the plan, while eliminating many other foods she had been eating, she is currently headache free. Both of these women are medication free and believe they will never go back to their old eating habits. Dr. Furhman says that while his plan is not a weight loss diet, IF you are overweight you will lose the extra pounds while regaining health. It IS extreme. It takes the traditional food pyramid and turns it all around, eating literally massive amounts of fruits, veggies and beans and minuscule amounts of animal protein and fats. He uses an acronym to remember to eat the most important foods:
GBOMBS
G=GREENS
B=BEANS
O=ONIONS
M=MUSHROOMS
B=BERRIES
S=SEEDS
In summation, I think his plan is well worth checking into. It is extreme but guess what? The way Americans currently eat is pretty extreme, too. It’s extreme in that we are fatter and on more prescription medication than ever. The front page of today’s Sun-Sentinel says that “at the rate Floridians are growing, obesity among Sunshine State adults is on track to hit 58.6 percent by 2030. That’s more than double the 26.6 percent that it is today.” But it’s not just Florida, it’s everywhere in America.
Want to do something really big to help combat the skyrocketing health care costs? Eat more GBOMBS. This isn’t a fad “diet.” It’s science and numbers and neither of those lie.
Make sure to take care of your fitness and go out and FIND your peace, as well.
