So often people run to their doctor’s office (or just call) to ask for an antibiotic. In the past few years, people have been downing the Z Pack (Zithromaz) like candy from a Pez dispenser. When patients are told they don’t need an antibiotic, they often get annoyed! I can’t imagine any reason a doctor would not prescribe an antibiotic, unless he or she truly believes it is not in the best interest of the patient. Now the news is out about the risk this drug causes with regard to FATAL heart arrhythmias. People need to understand that any drug that has the potential to help, also has the potential to harm. Every drug that has GOOD effects, can also have some pretty BAD ones. In the case of the Z Pack, the risk, though rare, can be fatal. Please read more about this new finding because it might effect you or someone you love.
Practice wellness. Drink a lot of water. Take deep breaths. Eat your greens and get your daily exercise. The best way to avoid the risks involved with taking medication is to not take it at all, unless necessary.
I will be at the gym for 8:30 and 11:30 classes today. Make it a great day.
I’m almost relieved to hear that the news has released this side effect update about Z-pac antibiotics. One of my biggest pet peeves is the abuse of antibiotics leading to bacterial resistance. People are so quick to assume that they need an antibiotic every time they fall ill, yet they often have a viral infection (which wouldn’t be effected by bacterial antibiotics at all). When I hear people harassing their doctor, demanding to have an antibiotic prescribed, it makes me want to rip my hair out!
Side rant: It’s important to remember – your doctor went through a TON of school to get to where he/she is today; they are experts in their field and most likely, they know more than you do on the subject.
I think in today’s society antibiotic abuse has increased along with the need-to-have-it-yesterday mindset. I’m glad you are promoting healthy eating and lifestyle choices as a healthy alternative to lab-created drugs. 🙂
Medicine certainly has its place in healthcare, but it drives me crazy when dangerous antibiotics and pharmaceutical drugs are the go-to solution for every sniffle or headache.
Hooray for healthy eating and living an active lifestyle.

Thanks for adding your insight to this topic, Nicole. It makes me crazy, too. I remember being pregnant and getting strep throat and my old school, wonderful obgyn taught me antibiotics aren’t NEEDED all the time, even in a bacterial situation. He was conservative regarding taking drugs while pregnant (though he thought a little champagne was ok 🙂 and chose fluids, rest and careful monitoring…in no time flat I was good as new and learned that running for antibiotics isn’t always necessary. It was a lesson that stuck with me for life. Thanks, Dr. John Fisher. And thanks Nicole. Have a great weekend.
