Here it is opening day. Whether it was my childhood days in the northeast, or my raising children days in the southeast, something about opening day has always screamed summer to me. Now, with my childhood well behind me and my children grown and flying from the nest, that neurological response to the crack of the bat and the sound of the announcer’s voice, is still as strong as ever.
Baseball’s opening day, depending upon where you live, means bathing suit weather has either arrived or is about to! That might be good news for some, but for others it might be a great big reality kick in the butt. Coming off of the spring holidays, today is a great day to clean out the pantry and fridge and also to discard the sweets laying on the counter. Out go the peeps and the marshmallow twists, the jelly beans and the jell rings, the chocolate bunnies and the chocolate macaroons and whatever else you are hoarding from the holidays.
Today is a great day to double up your water intake. If you haven’t had a glass yet, I suggest this is a great time to GET UP AND POUR A TALL GLASS. Bring it back to the computer and THEN finish reading. This morning I am going to pour a second glass before returning to my decaf. If you have a long commute to work, then wait till you get there, but then start drinking! The truth is we not only wake up dehydrated (which causes fatigue and fatigue definitely affects our moods) but starting the day with water and drinking a glass before each meal, helps ward off hunger which ultimately helps us lose weight. Go ahead, drink up!
With the longer and more desirable weather days upon us, it’s a great time to be outside. Walking, running, biking, climbing, jumping rope, skating, swimming, gardening, playing beach volleyball, hoops or even getting together with friends for a good old- fashioned game of baseball, the boys of summer remind us it’s time to jump into the season and just start playing.
As we move into this glorious season, you might occasionally want to consider trading in some of your gym time for any of the above activities. The gym is a great place, but in my opinion, NOTHING beats the great outdoors. I’m on it! I hope you are, too.

The weather is phenomenal!! I spent yesterday morning taking a brisk walk with my niece and her gorgeous Golden Retriever, Dakota. When we finally arrived at the park, she unleashed her. Well…….it was like a tv commercial!! Dakota raced around the park. Her ears were blowing in the breeze, her tail was fluffed out and I swear……..she was smiling!!! We walked for well over an hour and then we enjoyed a long drink of water. What a great morning. I don’t know who was happier…..Dakota or me!!!
