Great news about soy in this morning’s newspaper. A new study presented by the American Association for Cancer Research finds that breast cancer survivors need NOT worry about eating soy, despite the isoflavone chemicals (which have estrogen-like properties) contained within the soy. There has been concern that those chemicals might raise the risk of cancer recurrence. This conclusion, comes from a large study compiling data from more than 18,000 women with invasive breast cancer. An average of nine years after diagnosis there was NO statistical difference between woman who ate a lot of soy and those that ate little to none!
Catching up on my dvr yesterday, I saw a great segment on Dr. Oz about new findings regarding the link between what we eat and Alzheimers. A rather brilliant researcher has found that Alzheimers is much like diabetes of the brain. Certain foods seem to really effect the brain’s insulin resistance just as foods effect insulin resistance in the rest of the body. This brain insulin resistance seems to be a key factor in this dreaded disease. Suggestions were made to avoid smoked and aged foods (think meats and cheeses) as well as processed foods in general. We were, once again reminded, that most foods that cause one disease, often cause others.
My horoscope says to plant more seeds and continue nurturing my soil. I am on it. Like we have heard for as long as we can remember…”eat more fruits and veggies.” It was good advice then, and it’s even better advice now! Have a fruitful Friday!
