As if April and spring weren’t already filled with so much to celebrate, today we celebrate OUR Earth (and for many, Good Friday, while others are still in the throws of Passover). Yesterday we talked about the ripple effect and how just one act can change the whole world. A Billion Acts of Green is the theme of this year’s Earth Day, suggesting that if we each did just one thing to improve our environment, the ripple effect would be created and felt by all. “Millions of people doing small, individual acts can add up to real change,” said Chad Chitwood, a spokesman for a group coordinating Earth Day efforts. While individuals can pledge to do something small but sustainable in their own lives at act.earthday.org/ this pledge can also be simply made to one’s self.
There are so many big and small things we can do from switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs (which, I know in my house, has freed up a lot of time for Mitch, who has the job in this house, of changing lightbulbs, as they never seem to need to be changed anymore!) to reducing the amount of pesticides and other toxic chemicals. Simple things like being more mindful to what can be recycled or shaving one minute off of your shower time really DOES make a difference.
I honor Mother Nature and our Earth daily. This year I feel great about our home’s increasing efforts to recycle, our totally pesticide and chemical free gardens and our composting bins! It is truly amazing how much goes into that bin, yet it never gets full!!! Piles of leaves that would have otherwise made their way to garbage bags on the curb, daily coffee grinds and the filter, ALL our vegetable and fruit peelings and scraps, all in that one 20 pound bin and still so much more room to just keep filling. Today I will pledge to be a little more aware of the paper that I am using, because I have room for improvement, in that department.
What will you to do decrease your carbon footprint on this Earth that we will leave behind to our love ones, someday. For the sake of our home and the people that will continue to reside here over the decades to come, I hope you will consider making just one change, knowing that the ripple effect will be enormous.
**Thanks to my students who keep going the distance to try and help me put this SilverSneakers change into effect. I appreciate your calls and emails and your letting me know about your experiences at 24 Hour Fitness. Thanks, also for continuing to register down in Tamarac, where MANY of you now have! Ron called me yesterday and said he is ready to start a 3 day a week class schedule. It looks like, at this point, I will start with a Monday/Wednesday class, most likely at 11:30. Check with Carol to see if she will be doing Thursday or Friday. This is only the beginning. As more classes are needed, they will be added accordingly. Equipment is ordered and I would say, tentatively, that we should be good to start on Monday May 9. It may be a little crazy getting started, but I am confident that together, we will make it all fall into place. Thanks for your incredible support.
