It is estimated that up to 75% of people are lactose intolerant. Perhaps this is because cow’s milk is meant to grow calves into adult cows. If 75% of people can’t digest lactose, doesn’t it make sense that we aren’t supposed to be consuming it in the first place?
I enjoyed watching Dr. Mark Hyman talk about this and dispel some other myths about cow’s milk. While the dairy counsel suggests many health benefits are associated with drinking cow’s milk, they were challenged with a simple question….”GOT PROOF?” In fact, they don’t. We are led to believe that the calcium in milk builds and keeps bones strong, but science proves that the calcium we get from cow’s milk actually causes us to “spill” calcium from our own bones as our body detects more coming in. Problem is, humans don’t readily absorb the calcium from dairy. We only have to look at the huge problem we have with osteoporosis in our country, to see that this makes sense. The current thinking is what we really need is more vitamin D, calcium from dark leafy vegetables or supplements and lots of bone strengthening exercises. Any time you work a muscle, it pulls on the corresponding bones, ultimately building stronger muscles and bones.
Not surprised that Dr. Oz blew this segment by saying that he still endorses milk but only because it is a better choice than most other drinks like soda and sugary juices. That’s something like saying knives are safer than guns.
Have a great Vegan Feast Thursday. Do your own homework and decide things for yourself. Sadly, most of our western physicians having very little training in nutrition (ask any doctor and they will tell you that is so) and food really is thy medicine. If good foods are good medicine, than clearly bad foods are bad medicine.
