But I can see it makes NO sense at all!
Well, here it is –according to the Mayans, the last of the days of the world as we know it—personally, I think they were off by just a few days. After still another tragedy involving what turned out to be weapons of mass destruction. It’s never my intention to start a debate so I am not going there. I am all about personal rights and the protection of them. Though I have never wanted to learn to shoot a gun, or to have one, I think there is a probably a place for them, and I have no problem with people shooting them at a range, as a hobby, or an outlet– the same way I shoot pool. But someone tell me why on earth anyone should have shotguns and hundred of rounds of ammo? We as human beings have a responsibility to protect our youth. Period. Their right to be children should trump any of our rights to bear arms. In a perfect world, we could do both but this world, beautiful that it can be, is far from perfect. Each and everyone of those beautiful and innocent children deserved the right to swing in the playground and go home at the end of the day for an after-school snack. They deserved another bedtime story and to have many more visits from the tooth fairy. They had so much to look forward to as did the adults who lost their lives to protect some of our babies, but now they are angels, looking down and protecting us. I pray there are no tears in heaven.
I came on to the site this morning with hopes that I could post something upbeat about fitness, or the great kale salad I made this weekend, but those things will have to wait. Maybe the Mayans were on to something and maybe it’s time to put our own rights on a back burner in order that we can protect the basic, simple yet beautiful rights of our children. Given all that President Obama has seen in his 4 years in office, for him to say that this past Friday was the hardest, maybe it’s time to put our energy into OUR children…protecting them from themselves, as well as others. This is about so much more than gun control (or lack of it). This is about teaching peaceful practices and anger management–about parents being more in touch with their own kids–about getting better mental health care for our children that fall between the cracks and moving into a better world. Perhaps by Friday, we will find ourselves not just in a new calendar, but in a new direction that will better serve our babies.
Without peace, we can’t have health and without health we got nothing.
