I love a break from routine as much as the next “guy,” but just as much, I love getting back into a routine and today it’s back to work, healthful eating, and starting to realize my goals for the new year, and I welcome 2013 with open arms. One routine I haven’t broken is a “shot” (more like a spoon) of apple cider vinegar upon waking. Who knows, maybe it has helped me avoid (so far) the cold/cough that everyone seems to have, everywhere I go. Maybe my immune system is gifting me for all the years of continuous exercise and lots of deep breathing. Whatever it is, I am thankful.
Makes me think that our resolution or goal for this year shouldn’t be weight loss–it should be health gain. When we begin to implement the very things that will make us more healthy, weight loss generally is a side effect, and what a wonderful one it is. If I could suggest just one goal it would be 30 minutes of daily exercise and if you have a pair of sneakers, you have everything you need to make that goal happen. With every step you are strengthening your immune system…in fact, people who exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week or more have 46% fewer colds and when they do get sick, their symptoms are only about half as bad. If you are worried about your bum knee, it’s probably just what you need to help it get stronger…if you are pregnant, 150 hours a week of exercise is recommended and this will not only benefit you, but your baby too, as woman who exercise during pregnancy deliver babies with healthier birth weights…if you find yourself anxiety ridden, regular exercise cuts that by almost 30%–probably way more efficient than a pill–and if you feel uncomfortable about your weight and working out in public, get moving inside your home every day and before you know you will be wanting to strut your stuff in public! Make today (or at least this coming Monday if you can’t handle starting a new plan midweek) the day you put YOUR HEALTH at the top of your goals and everything else will follow.
If you are local and you want to come take class at Tamarac Fitness Center, let me know, or call the gym directly at 954-726-1070. If you are looking for some one-on-one training sessions, I would love to help you reach your goals. I have moved a few things around on my schedule and have 2 or 3 hours during the week to work with you at your home, or mine. Please contact me through the contact link on this site and let’s get busy! I would love to help you better your health and reach the goals you have set for yourself, whether they are to lose weight, get more fit, improve flexibility, reduce stress or learn all about how eating a plant-based diet can improve their physical and mental health. If you know someone who is looking for some help with any of these goals and they live locally, please share this info with them.
I can’t sign off without wishing our adopted adult son Peter the happiest of birthdays. I also want to thank him for being part of the reason I ended up adopting a plant-based diet in the first place. Thanks for being in our lives, Peter, and make it a great day!
I will be teaching and training today on my regular Wednesday schedule and I am ready to get moving. Hope you will be, too.

I have never heard of the vinegar tip, but I sometimes drink a spoon (or maybe shot?) of virgin coconut oil for its health benefits too!

I use the coconut oil externally, Janet, but definitely need to try to get some into my diet (I am not a big fan of the taste of coconut). The health benefits are wonderful, it seems….certainly loving it on my skin!
