There is nothing like waking up on the first day of my favorite month of the year. March brings us a change in clocks (yay!!) and the first day of spring. It brings March Madness to basketball fans and the boys of “summer,” make their return to baseball. In many, many parts of the world, it really does come in like a lion and goes back out like a lamb as most everyone gets to watch the last of the messy snows turn to green grass. Perennial gardens begin blooming and even here in Florida, gardenias know its time to get ready to show their beauty and share their drug-like fragrance! Actually, many fruit trees are flowering now and 3 of our pineapple plants have just begun to show their growing “babies.”
To me, March has always been the month that brings us out of the cold and darkness and into the warmth and light. Though that might seem crazy for someone who lives in Sunny South Florida, it IS the case. While I am grateful to live in a warm weather climate, March and spring are about SO much more than weather. They are instead about rebirth, rejuvenation and growth. We can all stand some of that!
In the fitness arena, people will start lacing up their sneakers and hitting parks, trails and streets fore early morning, after work and weekend runs. As they shed their layers of clothing, they will look to shed some unwanted pounds gained during the “stay in and stay warm” months of winter. Personally, I am excited to get back in the pool on a regular schedule. Last week the warm temperatures allowed me to get back in the pool after a 3 month break, and I was actually able to swim 3 days last week. Last year I started with just a few laps. This year, I started with 20. IT FELT GREAT. In my constant effort to stay balanced, I am promising myself not to get too caught up in as RIGID of a swimming schedule this spring and summer, but I am anxious to get in there a few days a week. Besides it being a great addition to my workouts, it seems to make everything else better. When I was swimming last summer/fall NOTHING hurt! I took off a few pounds, it did wonders for skimming some inches off my entire body and most importantly it worked like massage to my body. I highly, highly recommend it for MANY reasons.
I hope you found some hearts, yesterday. I found them in the massive leaves on my neighbors tree as well as lots of decorative hearts in the form of jewelry and tattoos! I am going to keep looking.
Sometimes, before you swim, you have to run. That’s what I am off to do. Have a wonderful March 1. See you back here tomorrow after another episode of Biggest Loser. Before we know it, it will be the much awaited make-over episode…perfect in spring!
Have a terrific Tuesday. However you march, do it to your own beat!

We have a Mulberry Tree in our back yard that has yielded a handful of berries for the past few days. Soon there will be enough to share and I will bring some to you. Mulberries (if you are unfamiliar) resemble blackberries but they’re much smaller (with no hard spots like blackberries). They’re super sweet and very juicy – I usually end up with berry stains on my fingers. OK – now I’m having a berry craving 😉
