Here in Broward County, it’s back to school today for public school students and teachers. It doesn’t really seem right that school starts in what seems like the middle of the summer. There is still so much swimming and playing left to be done, yet in just a few hours everyone will be in their classrooms going over schedules and rules! If you live in this county, or another one with school starting today, please remember to slow down for school zones and be even more alert on the roads than you usually are. If you are filling a lunch box for your child, please include some healthy snacks and think in color! Because it is still summer there are beautiful fruits at their season’s peak, just begging to go to school. Consider some of those great “bars” — look for the ones with all natural ingredients like Larabars, Kind and Kashi brands. Teach your kids to like water. Studies show that when drinking water, your kids are more likely to enjoy their fruits and veggies, so sometimes one good choice, sparks another.
Please, teachers…take some time to let your kids MOVE. Whether it’s recess on the playground, or yoga in the classroom, there are always a few minutes to break from brain work and do some muscle play. Maybe even teach your students the importance of taking a minute or two to be still in meditation. Remember that when meditating the brain doesn’t really shut down…in fact it lights up, literally. So what’s good for the kids, is really good for the teachers, too!
So for those who head back to the classrooms today, wishing you a safe, productive and happy first day back. If you can read this, thank a teacher!

as retired teachers we want to say that it’s not always easy to find time to let kids run around and play but it’s always possible to MAKE time. And the payoff is worth the effort.
