The plate is half full…of vegetables and fruit, that is! Today, first lady Michelle Obama and Tom Vilsack, secretary of agriculture, reveal the updated food pyramid, which is no longer a pyramid at all, instead it’s a plate. Right away, a plate makes more sense. It’s a better visual. On the plate, there really is no room for sweets and fats. You fill half of it with vegetables and the other half is divided between grains and “proteins” ( I still don’t understand why we are pushing MORE protein than what we get from the veggies and the grains, but again, at the plate is half full!) It sort of throws me that there is a much smaller circle beside the big one, which represents “a glass.” Like a glass of milk or a serving of low fat dairy such as yogurt. Is this at every meal?
As so many Americans are still morbidly obese and so many are diagnosed with cancer, diabetes and heart disease daily, and the longest study of nutrition ever done clearly shows the connection between this and animal protein consumption, than clearly there is a disconnect. I understand it. But the good news, today, is that at least the plate is half full!!! That’s a whole lot better than when veggies were simply considered a side dish, so I will celebrate the half full plate and hope that you will, too!
Have an awesome Vegan Feast Thursday and..GO HEAT!
