Congratulations to our Miami Heat on their win in game 1 last night. I wish I could say I watched it all, but I seem to do my best napping while they are playing…which actually seems to work well for them, as well as me. Somehow, I manage to be awake for the end, which really, watching basketball, is just perfect!
What I did watch yesterday, was Monday night’s premier of Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition. It was ok. Just ok. I felt that squeezing one year’s worth of what it takes to lose 161 pounds, into one hour (less commercials) loses a lot, as compared to BL, where they put one week of this into a 2 hour show. I do like the trainer (and his blue eyes) Chris Powell, who is very Bob Harper like in sensitivity. He may, however, be too soft in that after a 90 day weigh in, when contestant Rachel only lost 3 pounds, there didn’t seem to be any emotional intervention. And I never could really understand if her family was supportive or not, though the mom lost 50 pounds. In the end, 161 pounds lighter, a very attractive Rachel, stood so proudly on that scale but she still did not look done with her journey to me. What happens next? I have no idea. Honestly, what stuck me most about this episode was that at 369 pounds (and 21 years old) this woman worked as a PHYSICAL EDUCATION teacher in a Christian elementary school. Hello? HOW DID SHE GET THE JOB? How do you hire someone SO unhealthy to teach young, impressionable little people, about being physical and healthy??? It’s not like they hired her 10 years ago and she had an accident and put on a lot of weight…at 21 how long could have she been working there? That’s the kind of stuff that makes me go HUH??
For those of you that attend my SilverSneakers classes, we will be tweaking the schedule again soon. 16 years ago, a co-worker at Tamarac Fitness Center asked me if I could teach a new kind of senior class at a gym in Coral Springs and within a few days I was happily instructing SilverSneakers classes, an insurance funded program, new to the fitness arena. This was a dream of mine, that someday, insurance would pay for people to be well! Over the 16 years there have been many changes and I ended up at Bally while my co-worker ended up at Golds Gym in Sunrise. Because all things come full circle, Ellen and I find ourselves back together again, at Tamarac Fitness Center. While there are no immediate changes to the schedule (it will take a couple of weeks) there will be additional classes on the schedule next month. Ellen brings with her a large group of students, as I did when relocating, so we are trying to work out some kinks, but she will be teaching SilverSneakers 2 classes and I will probably be adding a yoga stretch class. More info about this as it unfolds. I do believe that together, under Ron and Wendie’s roof, Ellen and I can provide a really well rounded schedule of classes and put the love and dedication into the program that it (and all our “people”) deserve! I do expect that today might be a little crowded because we had no classes on Monday, so its a good thing we do all love one another as we might need to get pretty close on the crowded days. I will NEVER complain about TOO MANY people coming out to get in their daily dose of physical fitness.
Wherever you are, enjoy your day. Find time for YOUR fitness, and of course, for some peace.

Rachel (Oliver) was on GMA Tuesday morning (there is video on the GMA website). She has lost an additional 30 pounds bringing her total loss to 191 pounds to date. She says in the interview that she’s not done yet and it was good to see that she is continuing on her journey. I felt like there was some closure which was missing from the show Monday night.
Chris Powell is just adorable and from what I’ve been reading he advocates eliminating refined sugar and refined carbs from your diet as well as a carb cycling type of program. His website and Facebook page are full of amazing stories and transformations that are just astounding and incredible.

Thanks, Carol, for that Rachel update…I agree the one hour show left us hanging …its great to hear she is still losing as I was concerned about her somewhat happy go lucky seeming attitude about it all….Thanks for sharing what you learned from GMA. Love you
